Trees in the city parks and right-of-way (area between city streets and sidewalks) belong to all city residents. Although the city is responsible to plant and prune the city trees, we as residents can do a tremendous amount of good to help keep the city trees healthy. Some areas of concern include Waterbags, Volcano Mulching, Mower and String Trimmer Damage, and Right-of-Way Parking.
One of the most common causes of tree damage is the result of mowers and string trimmers.
Parking on the Right-of-Way (area between the street and sidewalk) is prohibited in the City of Canandaigua. Vehicles and other heavy objects disturb the root systems of city trees.
Heaping mulch around the base of a tree (called volcano mulching) is not healthy for the tree and can cause death to the tree.
When the city plants a new tree, they will place a Gator Bag with it to properly water the new tree for the first year.
